immersive sound setup for ongoing exhibition at klangwelt toggenburg (2025)

for Idee und Klang Audio Design I lead the technical planning and installation of a 34-channel speaker installation inside the 2025 newly built resonanzzentrum peter roth. The setup offers visitors a fully immersive audio experience, where sound can be experienced in a unique atmosphere for cultural and tourist activities.

The Installation uses PoE powered and Dante compatible Speakers by Genelec, allowing for a very neat setup with minimal cabling. the speakers are mounted on three flying metal rings, of which two can be adjusted in height. Using a relatively affordable Dante License and Ambisonics (in my personal preference the IEM Plug-in Suite) allows for quick spatialization and fun operation with any DAW.

video teaser masters recital (2022)

to finish my masters degree in audiodesign i had a concert where I was allowed to perform with fellow friends from the music academy, show two multichannel pieces I created during my studies and also play a solo piece with my modular (including my approach to a dsp-platform for eurorack, which was the content to my master's thesis).

The group pieces included an improvisation, for which i built a box that could control wall powered LED bars with relais from max/msp (as a "score generator"), a piece for video, movement and live-sound with an analog modular synthesizer, and another collaborative piece making use of my oldschool revox a77, modified to allow pitch control and a frippertronics setup with two other tape machines, allowing the musicians to cue their recording onto the loop themselves.

Sound programming for a permanent installation inside a cable car mast (2024)

«Jeder Mast spiegelt akustisch eine Umgebung und in ihm finden wird Menschliches wie Naturhaftes. Und so spiegelt die Seilbahn quasi als Resonanzkörper unser Leben."

For the composer and music researcher Michel Roth, I was asked to assist with the audio programming of a sound installation located on the beautiful mountainside of Toggenburg, now part of the Klangweg. The hardware and electricity supply was planned and built by Kaspar Hochuli from Tweaklab, with whom I had the pleasure of working at this unique location.

Inside the mast, a mini PC runs a max/msp patch that processes the audio signal from a contact microphone LOM Geofon attached high up on the tower. The sound gets amplified by a speaker at the base in the mast, which interacts with the structure itself. The captured sound is only minimally altered, to contain the naturally resonant feedback. The signal picked up by the contact mic can be streamed during the opening hours klangweg here from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m (april - october).

composition and technical planning for a theatrical audio walk (2023)

«Hört man den Madlenjäger, so bricht bald darauf ein Unwetter los, behaupten die Leute.»

Based on an ancient legendary figure from the folklore of the Pratteler Forest, where a knight committed a brutal act, that led him to wander restlessly through the forest. reshaping the traditional narrative of this legend, the allegedly kidnapped wife of the nobleman of Schauenburg is portrayed in this play as Freia, who takes on the leading role and becomes the true protagonist.

Freia’s voice, footsteps, and breath mingle with distant hunters, medieval sounds, and storms. The Audiences hears the music, sound effects, and cued texts through headphones (the ones usually used for silent disco). the artistic team consisted of Lukas Kubik and Basil Huwyler, who led the concept and artistic direction; Anna-Katharina Müller, responsible for performance and puppetry; Daphne Karstens, designing the costumes; Anna Paniccia, handling puppet construction and coaching; and myself, in charge of music and live sound.

sound design and programming for an immersive installation at the lighthouse ship GANNET

«Tipping and Transiting between image, music and text in playful interactions. Ghosts of the past and visions of the future open gates to parallel worlds and dimensions.»

The installation was developed by Linus Riegger and Basil Huwyler, building on a previous sound and literature walk where everyday reality merged with an imaginary city map, conceived by Barbara Piatti. Clemens Fiechter and I developed the electroacoustic installation and created the sound design. We also made the recordings for Paul Clift’s original soundtrack of Portal Fantasies, which provided the foundation materials for our compositions.

A centrally placed, illuminated portal detects pass-throughs using a light barrier and dynamically triggers different scenes, while distance sensors throughout the space select pre-recorded spoken excerpts from Portal Fantasies. The music was either composed for the multichannel speaker setup (around 14 Genelec speakers suspended around the space and two subwoofers) or programmatically distributed. The sensors were read by a Teensy, and another one controlled multiple LED strips placed around the space and the portal.

Interactive light-and-sound installation (2019)

Circuit Lights is an improvised light and sound performance. It uses ordinary light bulbs and electromagnetic relays, which are switched by control signals from a modular synthesizer. The relay signals are processed and, together with the improvised sounds of the electronics, lead to an independent interaction. being my first solo performed piece on stage with electronics, this feels like a nice memory to remember :)

Developments

  • Nemesis – programmable DSP platform in eurorack format (2022–ongoing)
  • Motus – touch-sensitive interface for modular synthesizers (2020–ongoing)
  • MooSpace – transformable reverberation effect unit (2020)
  • Eurorack Modules – various designs for sound processing and control (2016-ongoing)
